Children's Hospital Colorado

Research at the Neuroscience Institute

The Neuroscience Institute at Children’s Hospital Colorado is dedicated to uncovering the latest treatments and care approaches in pediatric neurology, neurosurgery and developmental pediatrics.

Our providers and scientists are internationally recognized leaders in their research fields, spanning epilepsy, neurogenetics, neuromuscular disease/muscle disorders, neuro-oncology, craniopharyngioma, pediatric and neonatal stroke, hydrocephalus, spina bifida, autism and intellectual disability.

We also have expertise in numerous rare neurological and neurodevelopmental conditions and have been recognized as center of excellence in Angelman syndrome, Dup15q syndrome, Batten disease, Klinefelter syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, autism and many others. Thanks to our in-house precision medicine laboratory, one of the first of its kind, we’re able to diagnose genetic neurologic disorders with greater speed and precision than ever before.

What our neurosurgery and neurology research mean for pediatric healthcare

Our team is committed to improving the lives of children with neurological and neurodevelopmental conditions. That's why we're researching both common and rare pediatric neurological disorders and partnering with leading organizations throughout the world to advance our understanding, diagnoses and treatment of these disorders.

In addition to critical clinical trials, we are actively engaged with basic and translational research. This is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), patient advocacy groups, foundations and philanthropy. These efforts are the engine that will lead to discovery and dissemination of the next generation of therapies for children with neurological disorders.

"Our goal is to make sure that we treat the whole patient and that we impact their quality of life so that children have the tools they need to live a life of contentment with optimal physical and mental health."

- ANN REYNOLDS, MD

Neurology and neurosurgery research

Our neuroscience specialists are involved in more than 100 research studies, many of which are industry-sponsored clinical trials. Our faculty are consistently awarded grant funding by the NIH, Pediatric Epilepsy Research Foundation, Health Services and Resource Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, among others.

Our partnerships and consortiums include:

Developmental pediatrics advancements

Our developmental pediatrics research and clinical programs emphasize a lifespan approach, supporting patients from childhood through adulthood. This includes transition clinics, mentorship programs for youth and young adults with autism, and efforts to improve access to employment and adult care. Our researchers have particular expertise in diagnosing and treating fragile X syndrome, investigating sex chromosome aneuploidies, autism interventions, and foundational research on gene expression in the brain. We also leverage the power of informatics to build large-scale data infrastructure that allows for more in-depth, global research.
