Children’s Colorado has one of the largest otolaryngology teams in the country. We see thousands of children each year for ear, nose and throat (ENT) conditions. Due to the large volume and wide range of otolaryngologic illnesses and diseases we treat, we’re in the unique position to advance the understanding of these conditions through research.
What our otolaryngology research means for kids
The otolaryngology team at Children’s Colorado has varied research expertise that includes basic, translational, clinical, safety and device-related research. Physicians in our Department of Pediatric Otolaryngology focus on understanding the causes of common and rare ENT conditions. Our team’s research improves our ability to provide multidisciplinary care, ensuring that patients benefit from the latest advancements in diagnostics, treatment approaches and surgical innovations.
"As surgeons who take care of children with such a broad range of acute and chronic concerns, it's easy to ask, ‘how could we do this better?’ Our team works to come up with innovative solutions with the shared goal of taking better care of children and preventing the conditions we see day-to-day.”

Advancements in otolaryngology
Otolaryngology covers a wide range of conditions and so does our research. Researchers have investigated head and neck tumors, complex microbe-host interactions that lead to recurrent and complicated respiratory illness, tracheoesophageal fistulas and oral papilloma.
Our team is constantly innovating, looking for new ways to improve medical and surgical treatments of ENT conditions. Through rigorous research, we have developed medical prototype devices for more accurate sleep apnea diagnosis and created innovative tools for minimally invasive endoscopic ear procedures.
Our ENT department’s research is informing decisions every day on how to improve patient safety and increase hospital efficiency. Our research is also helping to improve specialized programs like the Microtia Clinic, which is the only clinic of its kind in Colorado dedicated to caring for kids with microtia conditions.
Our commitment to research has fueled advancements in areas such as airway reconstruction, cochlear implant technology and the management of chronic sinus diseases. By collaborating across specialties, we continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in pediatric ENT care.
