The Cardiac Intensive Care Unit provides expert, comprehensive care for critically ill children with congenital and acquired heart disease and adults with congenital heart disease in need of critical care. From pre-term infants and newborns to adults, our team treats the most complex cardiac diseases.

About the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU)

The Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) provides state-of-the-art recovery and monitoring for acutely ill cardiac patients and those recovering from heart surgery. Our multidisciplinary team is comprised of highly specialized doctors, dedicated intensive care nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, nutritionists, feeding specialists, social workers and educators who work closely with every patient’s heart surgeon, anesthesiologist and other caregivers.

Who we treat at the CICU

The CICU cares for pediatric patients who need critical care for heart problems, such as babies who need open-heart surgery or children experiencing significant heart issues. As part of our Heart Institute, our CICU team is specially trained to provide critical care for children with both congenital and acquired heart conditions. We also care for adults born with a congenital heart condition in need of critical care.

Why choose us for cardiac intensive care

Our team prioritizes continuity in care to provide the best results and maximum comfort for patients. This ensures that our nurses, doctors and specialists understand the specific care plan for each patient at any given stage of their treatment. This coordinated team approach helps us meet all the patient’s and family’s physical and emotional needs. Our experienced medical professionals care for you or your child while our staff provides family support and education and coordinates discharge plans.

The CICU at Children’s Hospital Colorado is part of the Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Consortium (PC⁴), an organization dedicated to improving the quality of care to patients with critical pediatric and congenital cardiovascular disease. Through this partnership, our CICU helps lead the field in cardiac critical care, surgery and intervention to drive continuous improvement and ensure that our quality of cardiac critical care is at the highest level.
