About the Medical Day Treatment Program: A School Within the Hospital

Created in 1991, Medical Day Treatment is a joint venture between Children’s Hospital Colorado and Aurora Public Schools. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for children and teens whose chronic medical illnesses prevent them from attending traditional school settings.

The Medical Day Treatment team works together with youth and families to reach academic goals and improve physical and emotional health.

Our team includes:

Why choose a special school for children with medical needs?

Located at Children's Colorado on Anschutz Medical Campus, the Medical Day Treatment Program provides medical, educational and psychosocial interventions to children and adolescents with chronic medical illnesses. This program is designed for students age 7 to 18 who have difficulty functioning in a traditional school environment, either because of their health needs or challenges coping with their medical diagnosis.

How does our school program work?

The program schedule is similar to school; it's open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. through 2:30 p.m. Children stay in the program for as long as they need based on their individual needs. Medical day treatment is helpful for kids making the transition out of the hospital or to stabilize children from the community who are having difficulty with daily activities at home and school.

Our accredited school program employs two certified teachers along with two paraprofessionals from the Aurora Public School system. The program is also staffed with nurses, a psychologist, social worker and other health care professionals.
