What is pneumonia?

Pneumonia is an infection in the lungs. It can be caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi that get into our lower airways.

Pneumonia in children often begins after they’ve caught a respiratory virus such as adenovirus, rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) or parainfluenza virus. These are very common viruses. Not every child who gets infected will develop pneumonia. Sometimes they just cause a head cold (also called an upper respiratory tract infection). But sometimes, they can move down into the lungs leading to pneumonia.

Who gets pneumonia?

Anyone can get pneumonia. The viruses and bacteria that cause infection are contagious and are spread by people who are sick with pneumonia and other respiratory infections. They spread easily by sneezing, coughing or contact with contaminated surfaces (like shared drinking glasses, used tissues, doorknobs and faucets). However, getting infected with a virus or bacteria from someone with pneumonia does not always mean that pneumonia will develop.

Children who are more likely to get pneumonia include:

  • Children with chronic illnesses, such as heart or lung disorders
  • Children with asthma
  • Infants born prematurely
  • Children with a compromised immune system
