At Children's Colorado, we are committed to consumer price transparency. It’s important to us that patients and families have the information needed to understand the cost of care within our system. Federal and State healthcare price transparency regulations require that Children's Colorado publishes its standard charges in two ways:
One way is through a consumer-friendly display of shoppable services. Patients and families should use this online price estimator tool to create a personalized out-of-pocket estimate that takes into account the individual patient’s insurance information and can help you understand possible charges.
The second way is through a comprehensive machine-readable file that lists all standard charges for all items and services and certain corresponding data elements. The links below include Children’s Colorado’s machine-readable files, published in compliance with the requirements and formatting prescribed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The information listed in this machine-readable file is updated annually.
Charges listed below and in the online price estimator tool are not a guarantee of the amount the patient will be charged or what the patient will owe. Actual charges will be based on the current chargemaster then in effect, which is updated from time to time. If the patient has insurance, the insurance benefits will ultimately determine the amount the patient will owe (including deductibles, co-pay, co-insurance and out-of-pocket maximums). We strongly encourage the patient to consult with their health insurer to understand their benefits and the amounts the patient may owe.

The information below can help you understand the charges you may see when you visit one of our emergency departments (ED).
Will I receive more than one bill?
Yes, families typically receive two bills: one from Children’s Colorado and one from their provider(s). This is because many of our providers don't work directly for the hospital. Instead, they have privileges to practice at Children’s Colorado. The Children's Colorado bill covers clinical services such as nursing care, therapies, radiology, labs and more. The second bill covers the providers’ care. Most of our providers bill through CU Medicine.
What do the Children’s Colorado charges, sometimes called a facility fee, cover?
The bill that families receive from Children’s Colorado will include itemized charges based on the level, length and type of care provided to the patient. In the ED, it is based on how much care the patient needs on a scale from one to five and covers all clinical facility expenses that were needed to care for the patient, equipment and supplies, technology and physical space.
How do you determine how much to charge on the Children’s Colorado bill?
Patients who need a higher level of care will have a higher charge. The charge is based on how involved the illness or injury is and the patient’s specific needs and resources required.
A level 1 charge covers medical conditions that can be diagnosed and treated with very few steps. A level 5 charge is for patients who need the most complex care, including multiple tests and complex clinical interventions. It is important to note that the charge is not based solely based on a patient’s diagnosis. The services provided at the bedside and the coordination of care required by the specific patient’s condition could result in a different charge than another patient with the same diagnosis.

The information below does not apply to patients who have health insurance through Medicaid, other government programs, an employer, or the private insurance market. If a patient has health insurance, the amount the patient owes will depend on their plan and can include deductibles, co-payments and co-insurances. A typical emergency department visit will incur other charges that are not included in the facility fee. You may see separate charges on your bill for services such as imaging, labs, procedures, pharmacy, and supplies. At Children's Colorado, we supported state legislation in 2017 requiring health facilities in Colorado to publicly post charges for the 50 most common inpatient charges and the 25 most common outpatient charges for patients who do not have insurance (also called "self-pay"). We are including the locations for these services as required by law.
Do these inpatient charges represent the total cost of care?
The charges listed for these healthcare services are estimates of what to expect for the most common inpatient charges for patients without health insurance. Charges may vary based on the circumstances at the time that the service is rendered.
Charges are determined based on how involved the illness or injury is and the patient’s specific needs and resources required (such as time with nurses and technical staff, special equipment and other services, only some of which occur at the bedside). The inpatient charges below do not include physician other certain health care providers' services at Children's Colorado.
Patients may receive a separate bill for these services because when you see a doctor or specialist at Children's Colorado, you'll receive two bills: one from us and one from your provider or providers. This is because our doctors don't work directly for the hospital; they have privileges to practice at our hospital.

At Children's Colorado, we supported state legislation requiring health facilities in Colorado to publicly post charges for the 50 most common inpatient charges and the 25 most common outpatient charges for patients who do not have insurance (also called "self-pay"). We are including the locations for these services as required by law.
I have health insurance. Will my charges be the same?
The information below applies to patients without health insurance (also called "self-pay"). The information does not apply to patients who have health insurance coverage through Medicaid, other government programs, an employer or the private insurance market. If a patient has health insurance, the amount the patient owes will depend on their plan and can include deductibles, co-payments and co-insurances.
If you have health insurance, you should call your health insurer to determine accurate information about your financial responsibility for a particular healthcare service provided at Children's Colorado. If you have questions about your bill, please contact our Patient Financial Services team at 720-777-6422.
Do these charges represent the total cost of care?
The charges below do not include physician or certain other health care providers' services at Children's Colorado. Patients may receive a separate bill for these services because when you see a doctor or specialist at Children's Colorado, you'll receive two bills: one from us and one from your provider or providers. This is because our doctors don't work directly for the hospital. Instead, they have privileges to practice at our hospital.

Important considerations for these standard charges
It is important to note that these charges may vary from what is represented on a patient's bill for healthcare services. Charges may vary based on the circumstances at the time that the service is rendered. Charges are determined based on how involved the illness or injury is and the patient's specific needs and resources required (such as time with nurses and technical staff, special equipment and other services, only some of which occur at the bedside).
This information does not take into account patients with health insurance coverage through Medicaid, other government programs, an employer or the private insurance market. If a patient has health insurance, the amount the patient owes will depend on their plan and can include deductibles, co-payments and co-insurances. If you have health insurance, you should call your health insurer to determine accurate information about your financial responsibility for a particular healthcare service provided at Children's Colorado.

Additional billing resources
When you see a doctor or specialist at Children's Colorado, you'll receive two bills: one from us and one from your provider or providers. This is because our doctors don't work directly for the hospital. Instead, they have privileges to practice at our hospital.
If you have questions about your bill, please contact our Patient Financial Services team at 720-777-6422.
There are two types of fees that support how we care for children:
- Professional fees: Professional fees only pay for the time the doctor or advanced practice provider spends with the patient. These fees are billed by CU Medicine or independent doctor.
- Facility fees: Facility fees pay for the rest of the patient’s care team at Children's Colorado, and more.
