About the Pediatric Pulmonary Hypertension Program

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is high blood pressure in the lungs. This is a rare, serious condition that can affect both the blood vessels and the airways of the lungs. Our program brings together experts from our Heart Institute and Breathing Institute to address every aspect of your child’s condition, so they get the most comprehensive care.

Established in 1996, the Pediatric Pulmonary Hypertension Program at Children's Hospital Colorado has been leading the way in PH treatment for children. We’ve treated thousands of children with pulmonary hypertension and are continuously improving our program and treatment based on our experience, expertise and the most recent evidence-backed research.

Who we treat at the Pediatric Pulmonary Hypertension Program

We treat every type of pulmonary hypertension and our multidisciplinary approach to care addresses every aspect of the condition, often involving experts from different specialties. Pulmonary hypertension is typically categorized into five groups and your child will see different specialists depending on what kind of pulmonary hypertension they have.

Why choose the Pediatric Pulmonary Hypertension Program at Children’s Colorado

Our program is a pediatric Pulmonary Hypertension Center of Comprehensive Care, accredited by the Pulmonary Hypertension Association. This accreditation means that our care team meets the highest level of qualifications, we have access to specialized resources and we provide a range of therapies. It also reflects our commitment to delivering high-quality, comprehensive expert care for children with pulmonary hypertension.

Our primary goal at the Pediatric Pulmonary Hypertension Program is to improve your child's quality of life by focusing on early detection and treatment. We collaborate with other top pediatric PH centers internationally to stay up to date on advances in therapy and treatment options, including being a site member of the Pediatric Pulmonary Hypertension Network.

A whole team of pediatric experts to support your child and family

Children with PH require specialists trained in diagnosing and treating kids because PH can affect them very differently than adults. Throughout our decades of experience, we have seen some of the rarest and most complex cases of pulmonary hypertension. We have experience with all medication treatment options as well as access to clinical trials for new therapies.

In addition to specializing in caring for children with pulmonary hypertension, we also look at every aspect of your child’s health, both from the cardiology and pulmonology perspectives. We know navigating two different specialties can be difficult for families, which is why we’ve brought all the experts your child will need under one program. To make sure your child gets the best care and their treatment is as easy as possible, our team includes:

  • Cardiologists
  • Pulmonologists
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Nurse care coordinators
  • Social workers
  • Pharmacists
  • Palliative medicine experts
  • Nurse practitioners
  • Neonatologists

Looking for a second opinion?

Heart conditions vary widely in type and severity — and differ greatly from children to adults. A heart transplant is a big step and it’s important to make sure you’ve looked at every option for your child. And if our experts agree that your child does need a heart transplant, you’ll already be in the right place.
