Mayo Clinic’s Todd and Karen Wanek Family Program for Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome and Children’s Colorado are collaborating to provide solutions for patients with this rare and complex form of congenital heart disease in which the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped.

Study Finds Making Flu Vaccines Mandatory for Healthcare Workers Reduces Absenteeism and Increases Rates of Vaccination

A multi-institutional study shows that mandatory flu vaccines for healthcare workers improve vaccination rates by as much as 30% and reduce absenteeism during critical periods by about 6%. Further, vaccinated healthcare workers had a 30% reduction in absenteeism compared to non-vaccinated healthcare workers overall. Children’s Colorado was one of the hospitals that mandated the flu vaccine during the trial.

The published study in The Lancet Infectious Diseases is the culmination of approximately three years of scientific research to better understand this condition. The rapid progress is in part due to a unique partnership on Colorado's Anschutz Medical Campus, in which the front-line clinicians were able to move extremely quickly from clinical observation and alerting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to laboratory studies to investigate the relationship between EV-D68 and AFM.
